Background

The European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 required the Commons to approve the negotiated withdrawal agreement before it could be ratified. On 15 January 2019 MPs voted the government's motion down by 432 to 202, with a large section of the governing party voting against it. The government survived a no-confidence vote the following day and brought revised versions of the deal back, which were also defeated.
