Background

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the high Arctic, about halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Its main settlement, Longyearbyen, sits at 78 degrees north. Winters are long and dark, summers are short and cool, and the ground is locked in permafrost. Almost no one lives there. The Norwegian settlements held just 2,512 people in early 2026. Even so, the islands offer real opportunities. Coal mining drove the economy for a century until the last Norwegian mine, Mine 7, closed in 2025. The seas of the Barents shelf support a valuable fishing industry. Tourists come for glaciers, polar bears and the midnight sun, and scientists use Svalbard as a base for Arctic research, including the Global Seed Vault dug into the permafrost near Longyearbyen. Development is hard. Everything from food to building materials must be shipped or flown in, buildings must stand on piles so they do not thaw the permafrost, and the cold and darkness limit outdoor work. Norway now protects around two thirds of the land, betting that research and carefully managed tourism, not mining, are Svalbard's future.

Causes

Extreme latitude creates an extreme climate

Svalbard lies between 74 and 81 degrees north, so the sun never rises in midwinter and never sets in midsummer. Temperatures stay below freezing for most of the year, and July is the warmest month. Sea ice and permafrost follow from this cold, and they shape every human activity on the islands.

Coal seams attracted the first industry

Carboniferous rocks under Svalbard hold thick coal seams, and from the early 1900s Norwegian and Russian companies built mining towns, including Longyearbyen and Barentsburg, to dig them. Mining justified the shipping routes, the airport and the settlements. As the mines became unprofitable and climate policy turned against coal, Norway wound the industry down, closing Mine 7 in 2025.

Rich seas and scenery bring new income

Cold, nutrient rich waters around Svalbard support big stocks of cod, shrimp and other species, making fishing one of the region's most valuable industries. The same wild environment of glaciers, fjords and polar bears attracts cruise ships and adventure tourists, and the stable cold makes the islands ideal for scientific stations and for the Global Seed Vault.
