Background
In August 2026 a flash flood struck the Himalayan border area between Nepal and China's Tibet region. The worst-hit area was Rasuwa district in Nepal, a mountainous district with a population of about 50,000, along with the town of Bidur and the Gyirong border crossing on the Chinese side.
The flood swept down the Lhende River and into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, destroying houses, roads, bridges and hydropower projects. It also hit Gyirong Port, a major land crossing into Tibet, cutting roads, communications and power there. The area lies on a route used by pilgrims travelling to Kailash Manasarovar, which is why so many foreign tourists were caught up in the disaster.
Nepal is a mountainous, lower income country where floods and landslides happen most years during the monsoon season, and many hydropower and border facilities in this remote district are hard for rescuers to reach.
Causes
Glacier snout collapse
Satellite imagery reviewed by Reuters and analysed by geologists indicated that the lower part of a glacier broke off at about 5,200 metres and crashed onto the valley floor about 1,200 metres below. Experts said this collapse probably entrained a large amount of rock and sediment as it fell.
Possible earthquake trigger
A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded about seven minutes before security footage showed the flood hitting the border. Nepali officials said the quake was one possible trigger for the glacier collapse, but this was not confirmed.
Recent snow melt
An earth scientist reviewing the satellite imagery said glaciers in the valley appeared covered in snow the day before the flood but were mostly bare ice on the day itself, suggesting warm conditions had melted snow in the 24 hours beforehand.
Upstream landslide blockage
Nepal's disaster authority said a landslide about 20 kilometres northeast of the Nepal-China border crossing caused a glacier-inclusive flood in the Lhende River. Authorities warned a second flood was possible because a blockage remained lodged upstream.
Effects
Primary
- At least 95 people killed, with 157 bodies recovered by the evening of the flood
- Over 400 tourists reported missing, including around 340 foreign nationals
- Houses, roads, bridges and power projects washed away in Nepal
Secondary
- Flood alerts issued in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as rivers flowing from Nepal reached the plains
- Water levels on the river at Galchhi downstream reportedly rose by as much as nine metres within 30 minutes
- Roads, communications and power links to the Gyirong border crossing in Tibet were cut off
Social
- Survivors and injured people, including children, were treated at hospitals in Kathmandu and Rasuwa
- Families gathered outside an army training centre in Nepal seeking news of missing relatives
- An elderly woman was rescued from an old people's home in Trishuli Bazar
Economic
- Nepal's Energy Ministry reported a loss of 430MW of hydropower capacity, about 12 per cent of national capacity
Environmental
- Before-and-after satellite imagery showed lush green mountainside now buried under brown debris and sediment
Responses
Immediate
- Helicopters were used to rescue survivors from cut-off areas, though some could not land while waters were high
- More than 114 people had been rescued and were being treated at hospitals in Kathmandu and Rasuwa
- Authorities in Bihar evacuated about 5,000 people from six districts, with plans to move up to 12,000 in total
- China deployed at least 574 rescuers to the Gyirong land crossing
- Residents near the Bhote Koshi river were urged to move to safer areas amid fears of a second flood
